Free digital literacy training in over 25 senior centers and low-income housing facilities in San Francisco
Community Technology Network provides technology training in over 25 senior centers and low-income housing facilities in San Francisco. We place trainers and volunteers in local senior centers to provide free instruction. Our training sessions help seniors, low-income residents, and people with disabilities find information, stay connected, and access resources online. This training includes basic computer skills, online communication, and Internet safety.

Community Technology Network connects tech-savvy volunteers with individuals in need of training, and we provide the resources needed for effective digital literacy training. Ready, Set, Connect!
In 2014 over 14,000 students (40%) did not have a working computer or access to high speed Internet at home (Oakland Union School District survey). Oakland is experiencing high-growth in tech jobs, which have been growing by 4-10% per year over the past 5 years. Large and influential companies are relocating to Oakland and its startup scene is projecting significant hiring needs, along with non-tech companies that have tech jobs to be filled. Yet poverty threatens the economic health of diverse youth of Oakland and their communities making the effort to bridge to the digital divide more pressing than ever before.
This inequity sets the stage for limited technology skills – skills that are vital in today’s job market. The Pew Research Internet Project recently reported that 14% of adults and 41% of seniors age 65+ have not yet adopted the Internet. Of those, 77% said they would need someone to help them learn to use new technology. In response, Community Technology Network and the Oakland Public Library have partnered to create the Ready, Set, Connect! (RSC) program which improves digital literacy for at-risk youth of color in Oakland by training them to be Digital Literacy Trainers while preparing them for future employment. At the same time, the youth also help older adults successfully and safely use the Internet and other technology.
RSC engages corporate mentors who provide workshops, site visits and increase youth’s professional networks. The impact from these aspects alone can transform a young person’s ability to find work within their community and can help end the cycle of poverty and violence that plagues them and prevents them from achieving greatness.
Ready, Set, Connect! has been around since 2013 and in that time has developed the skills of 78 youth trainers while helping over 4,000 Oakland residents with their computer questions. Program reports for all sessions are available on our Reports page.
